I retired from a 30-year career working for the Federal Government at 52. My retirement plans included a life of leisure and traveling to parts unknown. That was in 2013, and I did just that for five years. Then, in 2018, my elderly mother came to live with me, and in 2020, I adopted my two-year-old granddaughter. At that moment, I became a Sandwiched Matriarch.
My life of leisure was gone, and I became the primary caregiver to my mother and granddaughter. As the life cycle presents itself, I always knew that I would be assisting with taking care of my elderly parents at some point. However, I never dreamed of adopting a child when I was 60!
Raising a Granddaughter is A Blessing from God
Being a grandmother raising a granddaughter can seem like the most challenging job in the world, but it’s also gratifying. Taking on the responsibility was intimidating at first. Still, I have found out that with love and patience, my relationship with my granddaughter is something more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. I have embraced this responsibility as a blessing from God, believing that He will provide me with the resources I need.
Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Assistance.
It is not easy to raise grandchildren, and most people do not realize how much work goes into it. Many grandparents have no idea what they are getting themselves into when they agree to raise their grandchildren, so do not be afraid to ask for help from family, friends, or even outside resources such as your city social services office. Many agencies can assist with medical bills, daycare, and other expenses of raising children. If you find yourself needing assistance, don’t be afraid to reach out and get help. You are not alone
Discipline is Necessary
Grandchildren usually get more leniency from grandparents. However, being the primary caregiver, I have to exercise more discipline. I attempt to take advantage of every chance to play with her. I love tennis, and so does she, so now that the weather is warmer, she goes to my tennis matches. She will start taking tennis lessons in June. My granddaughter also loves going to church. Maybe because I usually take her to McDonald’s afterward! I make time to read to her and have started to read to her bible stories. One of my favorites is Truth Becomes Her. https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1580449&u=2533269&m=99411&urllink=&afftrack=
When you can have fun and enjoy yourself, you will never have any regrets! Children grow so fast, and there is no greater reward than seeing your grandchildren smile and knowing you were part of making that happen.
