Caring for Elderly Parents

Six Ways to Help Our Elderly Parents Age Gracefully

When caring for our elderly parents helping them to age gracefully in spite of illnesses or deficits is important to me.  Grace means refinement, to do honor, and showing goodwill.  Caring for my elderly parents means I have to slow down in order to show grace and give honor and credit for all they have done for our family.  In order to slow down, I must properly manage my time.  Otherwise, I am hurrying about all of the time barely finding time to do anything let alone do it well and show grace.

How to Get Organized

So I must organize my days, weeks, months, and years to be effective.  Am I always organized?  Absolutely not!  But striving toward organization gets me closer to it than not striving at all.  Here are a few simple things you can do to begin the journey toward a better organization.  We will go into more depth later.

  1. Create a “To-Do List every day  Give specific time-frames for various tasks.

  2. Allow 30 minutes to one hour for a work-out every day, possibly before everyone else wakes up.

  3. Take 30 minutes to one hour to work on tasks for your child/children.  This could be scheduling appointments, reviewing their grades (which are probably online), and determining what they need to improve.  Include spiritual and character-building ideas to help your child.  If we are conscious of developing good character and strong spiritual principles, we are more likely to achieve it.

  4. Give yourself 30 minutes to one hour to work on tasks for your parents. Make a file for their income tax documents.  Copy their medical cards and laminate them.  If you have been granted permission to access banking and brokerage accounts, create passwords for the accounts and put them on your phone.  I use “notes” but there are apps for this purpose.

  5. On the weekends, before you go grocery shopping determine what you will have each day for breakfast and dinner.  Shop accordingly.  On Saturdays or Sundays, you can meal prep by either preparing the meals in advance or cutting up veggies and seasoning meats.  I am going to try the frozen crockpot meals from Freezer Family and report back.

  6. Determine you will wash clothes on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays for example.  That way your weekends are not spent doing laundry.   Schedule dusting, mopping, and vacuuming on Friday for example. Leaving possibly Saturdays for the bathrooms, kitchen, and changing linen.

Relax and Enjoy

Now that you have it all organized, you can spend time with your parent(s).  Maybe they enjoy hearing Bible stories or reading fiction.  They may have a book inside of them and want to dictate it to you.  They could need help telephoning a relative and you can help them make the call.  Bottom line, because you have organized your week, you have some free time to spend with your parent(s). You’re more relaxed which in turn makes them more relaxed.  You have given them joy and grace as they age in your home.

Power of Attorney

A Power of Attorney is a Powerful Tool (Revised) When caring for our elderly parents, have them sign a Power of Attorney (POA). A POA is a legal document conferring on an individual, the power to act on behalf of and in the best interest of another. Law Depot is a source I have used. It’s simple and easy to complete. If your elderly parent becomes incapacitated or otherwise incompetent to care for herself and you do not have a POA, you might find yourself needing a conservatorship. A conservatorship also allows you to act on behalf of another but you must petition the court for such a right and generally must pay a bond the amount which is set by the court. Bottom line, get a Power of Attorney to be safe.

Healthy Diet and Nutrition for our elderly parents

Studies have shown that many health problems in older adults come from malnutrition, not getting the proper amount of macronutrients and micronutrients the body needs to thrive. For some great tips on healthy eating habits when caring for our elderly parents check out our blogs on nutrition.

Seniors Workout Too!

Some people believe that as we get older, we should just sit back relax and take it easy for the remaining days we have left. However, as we age, proper nutrition and exercise is more important than ever. Proper balance to prevent falling, strength training to increase bone density, are just a few things that help seniors maintain a good quality of life. For some great tips on the benefits of strength training for seniors, please check out our blog posts.

Keeping the Mind Sharp

Although it might be tempting for our elderly parents to watch television all day, that's not a good idea. Seniors must make a conscious decision to use their minds every day. Playing games that require some mental acuity is important. Crossword puzzles, board games, card games, reading, paint-by-numbers are all fun activities that senior can do to keep their minds active.
