Mental Health Statistics
Mental health disorders are a growing problem in our society. And, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, about 7 percent of Americans will suffer from an anxiety disorder, and about 16 percent will experience major depression at some point in their lifetime. Other mental health issues, like bipolar disorder or substance abuse, occur even more frequently, with one in four people affected by them. These statistics are staggering!
The Anatomy of the Brain
The brain is an organ with four specialty areas: the cortex, the brain stem, the basal ganglia, and the cerebellum. These areas control thinking, voluntary movement, breathing, sleeping, balance, and coordination.
The frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes of the brain control the following: problem-solving and motor functions, handwriting, body position, sensations, memory and hearing, and visual processing.
Because our brains are like our muscles, it needs exercise to become stronger. So, when we engage in activities that challenge our minds and make us think harder, we improve our cognitive functions.
And, when we exercise our physical bodies by running or lifting weights, we also become stronger over time, and the more challenging these tasks are to us, the more improvement occurs.
So that is why it’s essential to find ways to exercise your mind as well as your body every day. Reading a book or playing a game can help you get started with your mental workouts!
Mental illness doesn’t Discriminate
Anyone can experience mental illness, which can be debilitating, especially if left undiagnosed or untreated. So, it is crucial that if you know someone or are showing signs of mental illness, be it depression, anxiety, or substance abuse, please speak up and be encouraged to seek professional help.
