Inflammation,  the real silent killer.  What do I mean by inflammation? No, I don’t mean you’re mad or angry or enraged.  Rather, inflammation refers to events occurring inside the body on a microscopic level.  Dr. Georgia Ede, a Harvard-trained doctor tells us that when cells are in distress, they release SOS signals.  These SOS signals are called inflammatory cytokines. A Cytokine Blood panel tells the amount of cytokine in the blood. Every part of the body contains inflammatory cytokines. It’s important to note that inflammation wreaks havoc in every part of the body.

How Do I Know I Have Inflammation, the Real Silent Killer?

Doctors in the areas of functional medicine, nutrition psychology, and alternative medicine, note the connection between chronic diseases and inflammation.  They believe that if you have chronic diseases, then you have inflammation. Specifically, these doctors believe that diseases like allergies, skin disorders, cancer, diabAlzheimer’seimers, heart disease, and most psychiatric diseases are caused by inflammation.

How did I Get This Thing Called Inflammation?

Doctors point to five (5) general areas that contribute to inflammation in the body.

Food:  Highly processed foods, sugar, and starchy foods contribute to inflammation.  In contrast, a diet of meat or fish protein and starchy vegetables will help get rid of inflammation.

Sleep Disturbances:  Sleep Apnea, inability to fall asleep, and other sleep disturbances contribute to inflammation.  To combat this, many doctors offer sleep tests to determine your sleep pattern.  These test  uncover  reasons for sleep disturbances.

Sedentary Lifestyle:  Being inactive is a huge factor contributing to inflammation.  The answer?  Get moving.  For example, walk, jog, use machines, attend and boot camp, play a sport.  The key is to get moving.

Stress:  Stress is a contributing factor to many diseases.  We all have stressors but it is important to figure out how to combat stress. That is, we must determine how to deal with stress in the best possible way. Admittedly, I used to poo-poo breathing exercises.  But I must confess, they really work.  Go to https://drchatterjee.com for information regarding breathing exercises.

Mindset:  Numerous studies show that if you have a negative attitude or a “Woe is me” attitude, you’re more likely to be stricken by  disease than someone  who has a positive, “can do” attitude.  Let’s work on changing our attitudes.
